Australia Bound!

Happy Monday Friends! I have exciting news! Over the weekend, the Bear and I booked a trip to Australia this winter. :)

The Bear and I aren’t well traveled, so I am pretty ecstatic to be going farther than the Mexican border.  We will be visiting Melbourne, Sydney, and Cairns in Australia.  Being the type A person that I am, I have just about every minute planned.  The Bear prefers city traveling while I prefer nature traveling, so we have a bit of both planned.  Of course we will visit Sydney’s famous Opera House, but  what I am super psyched about is going to Phillips Island to see the Penguin march!

And you can’t go to Australia without seeing some koalas and roos!

I pretty much spent the entire weekend researching Australian cuisine.  Being the wannabe foodie that I am, that was the first thing I started looking into!  That’s when I stumbled upon this article.  Now I know why the meat-loving Bear wanted to go to Australia so badly!  He will be in meat heaven with the emu, lamb leg roast, barbecued snags, meat pies, crocodile, and grilled kangaroo. Yes, you read that right… emu, crocodile, and grilled kangaroos!  Poor little roos! :-(

As you know I have quite the sweet tooth, so I am excited to try all the sweet goodies! Why hello Pavlova! Please get in my belly!

The Bear asked me how I was going to make this post health related since this is a healthy living blog. To which I replied, “I’m not!”  While I spend a majority of my life being health conscious, I use vacations as an excuse to go a little off the deep end. :-)

Have you been to Australia?  If you were going to Australia, what would be on your bucket list?  What’s your favorite Australian cuisine?

Target Practice #12

We made it to Friday! Woot Woot! <– I am turning into an owl.  I am riding my bike into work today because it’s casual Friday, which I my head means I don’t have to do my hair or wear makeup! Hopefully I arrive at work bruise and scratch free. Most likely I will keep you posted on Instagram!  It is Friday so you know that means it is time for some Target Practice.

borrowed stole the idea for the Target Practice Friday series from the ladies over at Fit.Fun.Femme.  I do things a little differently, but ultimately it’s where I share my progress on my short term goals, a.k.a targets.

Improve Pace - I worked on interval training at the gym once again, and once again I got bored after 20 minutes so I decided to do yoga.  Lots and lots of Yoga Meltdown this week.

Handstand - Handstand training went well this week. I can almost hold myself up for 5 seconds. Lol, I can’t believe I am actually excited for 5 seconds! If anyone is interested in learning how to do a handstand, the Purely Twins gave a great tutorial this week!

Half Marathon – I ran 10 miles on Sunday with the Pasadena Pacers.  I also got in a tempo 5k on Wednesday.  I have been trying to push the distance on my mid-week run, but I didn’t have the energy this week.  During a certain time of the month (*cough* menstrual *cough* cycle), I get very light headed so I played it safe with a short distance this week.

Eating Clean - My eats were questionable this week.  I may or may not have eaten a half pint of ice cream. :) I am not going to lie, I devoured that sucker!  I made up for it with a ton of garden salads and spaghetti squash made from my CSA box.

Spaghetti squash with ground turkey meat sauce! #yum!

I have absolutely nothing planned for the weekend except for a long run! So excited to relax!

Have a fabulously relaxing weekend!

Android Blogging Apps + YouTube Video

Today I have a different type of post for you! Last week my friend, TK, asked me if I would be interested in trying an Android App called DashDroid for an XDA Developers video. I jumped at the opportunity after learning more about DashDroid, which is a quick solution to wirelessly transfer files between Android and Windows devices.  Pretty cool, right? I love that cables are not involved because I have history of losing them!  Plus, I popped my YouTube cherry! Check out the video below to learn more about the app.

I must be the only healthy living blogger out there with an Android phone becuase it seems like everyone and their mother uses iPhone only apps.  Since I am one of the few with an Android phone, I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite Android apps.  Hopefully the five of you out there with Androids will find this helpful. ;-)

Android Blogging Apps

If you use Google Analytics, this app is for you because it is great for keeping track of your blog traffic if you happen to be away from the computer.

Photo Grid

This app makes creating photo collages super simple. You tell the app which photos to add to the collage and it will automatically arrange the photos.  If you don’t like the arrangement just shake the phone!

Photo Grid

You can also add fun backgrounds and stickers to the collage!

Photo Grid 2

This app works great on Android and iPhones. I love this app because it adds adorable labels to photos and it’s super easy to use.

Photo Squarer

I love this app for Instagram because is makes all photos square without cropping them. Plus, you can add a frame to the photo while zooming in and out.

Photo Square

This app does it all! You can crop, edit, and draw on pictures, but I like it to add pre-determined shapes to pictures.  I was never much of an artist!

I like stars! :) Vegas Stars

My old pace makes me feel like a speed racer now!

There you have it! I hope that the few Android bloggers out there find this post a little useful.

What is your favorite Android app?

Vital Rock Climbing

Last Friday I met up with my oldest friend, maid of honor, and sister from a different mister, Ashleigh. I have known my beautiful friend since my second birthday so we have a long story, too long for this blog, so I will just tell you that we are two ADD kids with a passion for adventures, good times, and giggles. :)

Ashleigh has been rock climbing for the last year, and she is always telling me how it’s a great functional workout. Finally the stars aligned and we were able to meet for a rock climbing tutorial! We met at VITAL Climbing Gym and I was impressed as soon as I walked through the front door.  I have been to a rock climbing gym before but it was nothing compared to VITAL.

At the gym, I rented special rock climbing shoes and borrowed some chalk for my hands.  The chalk helps with hand moisture which allows for a better grip to the handholds, while the rock climbing shoes fit like a glove which helps with standing on the smallest of footholds.

20130920_144150-psThen it was time for climbing! Ashleigh definitely has spidey senses because she was up the wall before I could count to three!  One thing that Ashleigh did stress was to use my legs to push my body up the wall rather than using my arms to pull myself up. This felt weird at first because it seemed more natural to use my arms, but once I got used to using my legs it became much easier.

20130920_144009-ps 20130920_144023-ps

Those kids made it look so easy!  I can’t believe I had not thought of this before, but rock climbing gyms are a GREAT place to bring kids to let out some of their energy!

Before I advanced to the harder wall, Ashleigh explained to me that each color tape is a different difficultly level.  We stuck with the beginner level since this was my second time climbing.

Ashleigh gave me some tricks to make the experience a little easier. The picture above shows her flagging which is when you stick your leg out against the wall to balance your weight in order to prevent your body from swinging away from the wall.

This wall was a killer! I needed some assistance. :)

20130920_151139(0)-psWe had a little too much fun on the slackline! FYI, slacklining is HARD!

Rock climbing was so much fun and a great workout to boot!  One thing I love about indoor climbing is that it is like solving a puzzle to find the easiest way to the top. I may just have to add rock climbing to my workout routine!

Have you been rock climbing before?  What’s your favorite thing about climbing? Have you been outdoor climbing?

Mt Baldy Hiking Adventures

Before there was running, there was hiking.  The Bear and I love to get lost in nature with a good hike.  Not only is hiking a great form of exercise, it is a fantastic way to clear the mind. Yesterday the Bear and I went to Mt Baldy so I thought I would share some pictures with you!

IMG_6123-ps IMG_6122-ps IMG_6155-ps IMG_6118-ps

We ate at the restaurant on the top of the mountain and it was quite good for being 7800 feet above sea level!

IMG_6101-ps IMG_6107-ps IMG_6105-ps IMG_6108-psOur eats weren’t very healthy but they were tasty!

Note to self: bring a jacket next time you hike in the mountains. It was cold and windy!

How was your weekend?  Do you enjoy hiking?

Target Practice #11 + Giveaway Winners

Hi friends! Happy Friday! I am going to start with Target Practice and then jump to the giveaway winners because that’s what you really came here for! :)

borrowed stole the idea for the Target Practice Friday series from the ladies over at Fit.Fun.Femme.  I do things a little differently, but ultimately it’s where I share my progress on my short term goals, a.k.a targets.

Improve Pace - On Tuesday and Wednesday, I worked on interval training.  I couldn’t last on the treadmill more than 20 minutes.  I absolutely hate running indoors because I get so fraking bored!  It looks like I need to find a new way to interval train outside.

Handstand - I also worked on handstands Tuesday and Wednesday at the gym. Handstand training is going really well. I can kick all the way up against a wall pretty much every time (yay!), but I still can’t hold my weight up without a wall (boo).

Half Marathon – In addition to 6 miles yesterday, this girl got a new personal distance record (PDR) on Sunday! I ran 12 miles for the first time and it was awesome!  I told myself going into the run that I wouldn’t worry about pace and just run at my comfortable pace.  The weird thing is the first 3 miles where in a 9 minute range! The 12 miles went well, but by the time I got to mile 10 and 11, my legs felt numb and I got the chills in 90 degree weather!  What the frak is that about?!

Eating Clean - Other than the pizza I ate after my 12 mile run (I think I deserved some pizza!), my eats were super clean this week.  I ate a LOT of vegetables this week and my berry obsession continues! Check out these yummy eats:

imageProtein pancakes without protein powder! Ingredients include: one tablespoon of coconut flour, two eggs, one mashed banana. Top with peanut butter and strawberries!

Homemade hummus from my friend Hosanna!

Now it’s time for the Lululemon Headband Giveaway Winners! The winners are:

Alexandra Shaw

Kristy Porter Graboski

Send me your address at Jillienne (at) ChasingRaspberries (dot) com and I will mail your headband right out to you!

Have a fantastic weekend!

Grilled Pesto Veggie Wrap

I am not ready for summer to be over! Sure, it is still in the high 80s in SoCal, but I don’t want the colder weather to start! (Yes, I said that like a complaining toddler!) This summer will go down in the books as one of the best of all time thanks to my half marathon and duathlon training! I just can’t give it up yet.  Luckily, the end of summer comes with the start of fall, which means Halloween (this girl’s favorite holiday), pumpkins, and indoor grilling!

Today we are going to take the grilling indoors with a Grilled Pesto Veggie Wrap.  As I mentioned several times in the last few posts, I have quite a few yummy recipes for you thanks to my CSA box.  This recipe was inspired by my favorite restaurant vegan Real Food Daily.  I love this recipe because of how simple it is.  You know I love the simple recipes!

Over the last few weeks I have been eating a ton of zucchini and eggplant. So much so, that the Bear has banned both of those things.  You may remember my Grilled Stuff Zucchini recipe from my guest post.  Well today, I am taking zucchini in a new direction.  I am still going to grill it, along with its friend eggplant, but then I am going to top it with yummy vegan pesto and wrap it up in a whole wheat tortilla.

A Soulcal Celebration: Lululemon Warehouse Sale + Headband Giveaway!

On Saturday I went to the Lululemon Warehouse Sale at the LA Convention Center, and I most definitely embraced the crazy! It all started when my friend Carla told me about the sale early last week.  I did not think much of it but thought I would attend to see what it was all about.  It was not until Friday that I discovered what a big deal this sale was.  There have only been four other Lululemon warehouse sales ever, people were waiting 3-5 hours in line Friday to find a good deal, and it even had its own Twitter account with the most up-to-date information!

My day at the Lululemon Warehouse Sale went a little something like this…

5:30 a.m. Saturday morning I woke early to the sound of my alarm.  Confession: I was really up at 4:00 a.m. tossing and turning because I was so excited for the sale!

5:50 a.m. My friend Danielle met me at my house.  She drove all the way from San Diego. Danielle might be the only person who loves Lululemon more than me!

6:20 a.m. We arrived at the convention center only to see a line of what looked like 400 people.

7:00 a.m. Starbucks opened!  Caffeine was needed for two sleepless nights!

7:30 a.m. With Starbucks in hand, Carla joined us, and the line started moving.  Are they letting people in early?!

8:00 a.m.  No, they just put everyone in another holding room until the doors open, but check out those prices!

8:15 a.m. Entertainment started and we are so close to the entrance to Lululemon heaven!

8:45 a.m. At last! We are in the showroom.  People are running to their size rack, but there is still a ton of goodies.

9:00 a.m. My arm hurts!  Do I have too many clothes?! Never!

9:15 a.m. Found the jackets and swimsuits!  Triathlon training gear? Check!

9:30 a.m. Sort through all the clothes on the floor.  Oh, there is a 25 item limit? I better put some of this back.

9:35 a.m. Discover the changing room, but there is a line.  Who needs a changing room?! I’ll just try on the swimsuit over my clothes.

9:40 a.m. More clothes are being brought out to the racks. Time for ROUND TWO!

9:50 a.m.  This is getting ridiculous, time to find Danielle and Carla to sort through everything one more time and check out!

10:00 a.m. An announcement is made, “The next 100 people in the checkout line get an extra 10% off!”

20130914_10114410:10 a.m.  Got the 10% off sticker! Checkout time! Bought 22 fabulous Lululemon items!

20130914_13462110:11 a.m. Sent a text to the Bear asking him not to divorce me!

I have to say that this was one of the most organized warehouse sales I have ever been to.  There were people constantly making the rounds to collect unwanted items, the racks were restocked regularly, and every employee was friendly and helpful.

Would I do it again?! Without a doubt! And I did! I went back on Sunday for even better deals.  I bought so many headbands that I am giving away one to 3 of my readers. I ran 12 miles with one of these headbands on and it stayed put the entire time, so be sure to enter the giveaway below through rafflecopter.

Three lucky headband winners will be announced on Friday!

Have you ever been to a warehouse sale like this?  What is your favorite piece from Lululemon? Do you think it’s worth the money?

“Target Practice” Friday #10

Howdy! Before I jump into Target Practice I wanted to tell my LA friends about the Lululemon Warehouse Sale.  It will be at Los Angeles Convention Center today through this Sunday. I will be there!  I hope to see you there too! On second thought, it’s cool if you can’t make it… more Lulu for me!

Now for Target Practice…

borrowed stole the idea for the Target Practice Friday series from the ladies over at Fit.Fun.Femme.  I do things a little differently, but ultimately it’s where I share my progress on my short term goals, a.k.a targets.

Duathlon - I completed my second duathlon last weekend which was a real butt kicker but I think I am ready to cross this target off the list!  The plan is to focus on my first and second half marathons over the next two months. Though, my half-ironman, half-alien friend, Brett, asked me if I would do the 2015 Half Ironman with him. I told him to let me get through my first triathlon first, so this winter, I will start training for my first triathlon!!!

Improve Pace - On Wednesday I ran a 10k negative split.  The first three miles were a slow 10-11 minute pace, while the last three miles were at a 8-9 minute pace.  I know it will take time to become a faster running, and I should be happy with my pace improving but I want to be fast already! Patience was never my thing!

Handstand - I met with my trainer, Craig Mills, on Tuesday and he had an awesome workout for me.  We also worked on handstands. Guess what?! I can kick all the way up on my own!  I kicked up 5 times by myself!  I still need to use a wall to lean against, but I am getting closer to crossing this target off the list.

Half Marathon – I ran 3 miles during the duathlon on Sunday.  The plan was to run 6 miles on Monday too, but I forgot about the Dodger tickets we had so I ran Wednesday instead.  I also plan to run 12 miles on Sunday.

Eating Clean - I ate pretty well this week.  So clean in fact that the Bear has banned eggplant and zucchini for at least a month!  I better start looking for some new vegetables to cook with. You know what they say… variety is the spice of life!

Just a breakfast rollup! My Dark Chocolate Dreams obsession continues!

I hope y’all (the country is coming out of me today) have a great weekend!  Maybe I will see a few of you at the Lululemon Warehouse Sale!
